Jordan Trail

4/27/2010

Directed by Chapter alumni, fifteen undergraduate members of Sigma Chi traveled the “Jordan Trail” this past Saturday morning. The “Jordan Trail” is a casual activity designed to cover the Jordan Standard in a much deeper sense.

During the event, each undergraduate brother went through a sequence of seven rooms with each room having a different Jordan Standard trait as a theme. Inside the rooms, an alumni brother led an informal discussion with an undergraduate for a few minutes at a time. The Jordan Trail quickly became a good opportunity to reaffirm everyone’s commitment to the Jordan Standard.

The activity proved to be just as enjoyable for the seven alumni facilitators as it was for the undergraduates. It was also a good chance for alumni and undergraduates to learn more about each other. In the future, the Alpha Epsilon Chapter alumni plan on providing each Sigma Chi pledge class with the  Jordan Trail experience.

Sigma Chi particiapates in ''Big Event''

4/12/2010

On Saturday, April 10, sixteen active members from the Alpha Epsilon chapter of Sigma Chi volunteered their time to participate in the “Big Event.” The Big Event is put on through the University, and representative groups from UNL are assigned a location to put forth their effort in bettering the Lincoln community.

The brothers of Sigma Chi were fortunate enough to assist Mercy Western Manor Apartments in western Lincoln. Mercy Western Manor Apartments offers low-income housing for families in need. The brothers diligently performed yard work on the entire premises, doing their best to exemplify the Jordan Standard. The chapter has already scheduled more volunteer work to be provided before the end of Spring semester, including Habitat For Humanity and the sponsorship of a Lincoln bike trail.

Consul's Letter

3/9/2010

Editor’s Note: This has been a turbulent few months for all Nebraska Sigs, none more so than for the undergraduate members who were caught up in the tidal wave of accusations and charges made against a handful of their brothers. They were displaced from the housing they depended on and the friends who lived alongside them. They were taken through a stressful and grueling requalification process to remain a part of Sigma Chi, lost friends and brothers, and lived through months of uncertainty about the future of our Chapter. Twenty-four highly motivated young men have emerged with a renewed sense of commitment to one another, the Fraternity, and the values for which it stands. The following letter from Consul Brad Staskiewicz ’10 provides a glimpse in to how these young men are pressing forward.

DEAR BROTHERS:
Last year was a trying time for Alpha Epsilon Chapter. We faced our share of challenges as we worked through the consequences of some bad and costly decisions made by a handful of brothers.

Chapter Forms Plan for Success
As we begin 2010, I am confident these challenges will only serve to make us stronger. Our Chapter has, with the help of committed alumni, trimmed our undergraduate roster to a small core of men who are committed to the values of Sigma Chi and to restoring our reputation at the University. The focus of our goals involves committing ourselves to The Jordan Standard and what it represents.

Weekly Chapter Meetings Are Still Being Held
Chapter meetings are held at the off-campus residence of four undergraduate brothers on a weekly basis. These meetings keep us engaged with one another, help us plan our future, and maintain the spirit of Sigma Chi. We are stressing transparency and accountability. Each executive officer is writing a weekly report about progress in his area of responsibility.

Sixteen New Members Initiated
Sixteen of our pledges completed their pledge education, performed well in the classroom, and were initiated this summer at the Balfour Leadership Training Workshop in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. We will implement an eight-week redesigned pledge program for all members, culminating in a mock initiation in April.

Chapter Creates New Focus
Elections were held November 22, and our enthusiastic officers and alumni leaders have developed new ideas and a new focus for the Chapter. Moving forward, an increased emphasis will be placed on holding ritual-based Chapter meetings and striving to live out Sigma Chi values in our daily lives. Another priority is examining and restructuring the many aspects of effectively running the Fraternity. In order for our Chapter to be successful upon reinstatement in 2011, many improvements must be made as we work alongside alumni who are supporting us.

Maintaining Positive Visibility
We have created a new position, service chairman, with the officer charged with organizing philanthropic events: our objective is to hold four events this semester with a 75% participation rate. We are staying active on campus by participating in intramural sports, various clubs, and academic honor societies.

As we do our part to revive the spirit of Sigma Chi at Nebraska, we are very thankful for the support and encouragement from our alumni. We are committed to success and to Sigma Chi.

In Hoc,
Brad Staskiewicz ’10

Undergraduates Attended Province Workshop

3/8/2010

Twelve of the 24 remaining Alpha Epsilon brothers joined fellow Sigma Chis from Iowa, Iowa State, and Drake at the Central Province Workshop on February 20. The Central Province, formed two years ago in a geographic reorganization of provinces, currently consists of four Sig chapters from Iowa and Nebraska.

The workshop, held this year in Ames, was designed to provide leadership training, encourage collaboration, and provide developmental tools for chapter officer efficiency. We’re proud that 50% of our Alpha Epsilon undergraduates participated, another sign of renewed Chapter enthusiasm. Most Chapters send only the current officers.

Led by Central Province Grand Praetor Benton Hendrix, Drake University ’06, the event solidifies the values of Sigma Chi while providing a great venue to experience the bonds of brotherhood.

Don Meier Scholarship Re-launched

3/8/2010

Two years ago as part of a renewed commitment to academic achievement, the undergraduate Chapter, with alumni support, outlined specific commitments and standards to improve scholarship. The results have been very positive; the Chapter has consistently improved its G.P.A. for six consecutive semesters. In its most recent report, Alpha Epsilon was in the top quarter of all Greek organizations—fraternities and sororities.

The Lincoln Alumni Association announced an initiative last year to keep momentum going in this important area by adding focus to pledge class scholarship. The association recognized the undergraduate with the top G.P.A. in each pledge class with the Landis Scholarship Award.

Also presented was a new Donald E. Meier Scholarship plaque to the Chapter. The scholarship was established and endowed by Chicagoan Donald Meier ’41. Originally from Oshkosh, Don was the creative inspiration and developer of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, the longest running single-sponsorship program in television network history. He is a consistent and generous contributor to the University of Nebraska Foundation.

Originally conceived and endowed in 1992, the scholarship is directed to a single pledge each semester whose G.P.A. is in the top quarter of his pledge class and who demonstrates financial need. However, awareness of the existence of the scholarship waned over the years until it was unearthed by Dr. Dennis Moore ’69 during a comprehensive review of scholarship initiatives.

Don, who fully underwrote his own college education in the School of Business, placed a balanced emphasis on academic achievement and need in endowing this scholarship, which provides at least $1,000 a semester.

As is the case for the Landis Scholarship Award plaque established in 1960, the alumni chapter will display the Meier Scholarship plaque in a prominent spot in the public area of the house as a reminder of the importance of high scholastic achievement within the Chapter. According to Ken Johnson ’01, “It will be a reminder to all Sigs about the importance of scholarship from the moment a new pledge arrives at 1510 Vine Street. We are very grateful to Brother Meier for his vision and generosity in establishing this scholarship and, with this new plaque in place, and energized about using it to its maximum extent in the semesters to come.”

Sigma Chi Captures Two More Titles

12/18/2008

Congratulations to the Sigma Chi A & B Volleyball teams, both of which captured all-Greek titles in this past season.  The Nebraska Sigs almost pulled off the sweep, but the C team lost in a valiant semifinal effort.  All in all, it was a successful athletic semester for us, and next semester should be no different.

Here’s to wishing everyone good luck on finals, a safe trip home, and happy holidays!

125 More

10/7/2008

The Alpha Epsilon chapter would like to thank all who attended the 125th Anniversary celebration on Saturday, October 4th. Our 125 years of excellence at the University is a testament to the character of our members and we are proud to carry on the tradition. As the oldest Greek chapter at UNL, we will forever be in debt to those members who came before us. It is truly an honor to claim membership to a chapter with such rich history.

The Active Chapter, and pledges, had a wonderful time getting to know our impressive alumni and hope that the bond was reciprocal. We thoroughly enjoyed every story, piece of advice, and guidance provided by all participants. From the evening at Brewsky’s, the Memorial Stadium tour (which was unbelievable!) and Saturday’s events, we have received an incomparable level of encouragement, support, and pride. With the establishment of a Lincoln chapter of the Sigma Chi Alumni Association, we hope that our interaction can foster growth within the Alpha Epsilon chapter. A special thanks to Consul Michael Classen, Magister Buddy Glover, Steve Davis, Ken Johnson and Curt Denker for planning the ceremony.

We would also like to give a warm welcome to our new Chapter Advisor, Dustin Bauer ‘04. We appreciate your involvement and look forward to building a strong relationship from which we can further progress the chapter’s interests.

The Active Chapter

Wednesday night marked the formal pinning of Alpha Epsilon’s twenty-nine pledges. They can now officially call themselves Sigma Chi Pledges and are very honored to do so. The active chapter is thrilled with the start of pledging as these young men will be the future of the house.

With the Homecoming game against Missouri just around the corner, the undergrads are very excited for the 125th Year Anniversary celebration. It looks to be a great time, see you next week!

Derby Days '08

9/16/2008

Sigma Chi's annual fall philanthropy, Derby Days, is set for September 21-26.  As always, sororities will compete against each other to be crowned Derby Days Champions.  New to this year's events are a week long change drive, a bake sale, and the return of the Derby Chase.

This year's field events also look to be a lot of fun, with girls competing in events such as arm wrestling, the egg toss, and musical chairs.

The week of events will conclude on Friday the 26th with a closing ceremony concert event to be jointly hosted by Sigma Chi Derby Days and Delta Gamma Anchor Splash.  The event will also double as a pre-party for the Nebraska vs. Virginia Tech football game the following day.  The lineup currently features Get Down! and a band TBA. As usual, proceeds go to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. Hope to see you all there.
